Guildford URC’s ninth Holiday at Home event was held over just one day in late August, the 26th. The change of format and timing was due to the refurbishment of our kitchen and ladies toilets which took place over the end of July and the beginning of August.
It may have been just one day – but it was ‘action packed’ for the 26 guests who attended, with coffee served from 10 am and the first session commencing at 10.45 am.
Once again a variety of interesting activities were on offer: Dick Elsey returned to continue his reminiscences on the ‘Golden Age of Radio’, Marion May led a session on ‘Fantastic Fans’ (many of the examples certainly were!) and Dennis May entertained a number of enthusiasts with more on ‘The Big Bands’.
‘In house talent’ led the two travelogues: Rosemary, Helen & Ellie recounted their ‘Ethiopian Highlights’ and Wendy & Ray led their audience on ‘A Circular Tour of Iceland’. Di Ferguson led the usual ‘Early Morning’ chairobics session and we were grateful to Alison King joining us to co-ordinate the Arts & Crafts sessions on offer through the day.
The last session of the day was led by Robert Grimmond who had visited us previously with his collection of antique objects – ‘What are they used for?’ This year he brought along smaller objects so that the session could be run as a table top quiz. The afternoon ended with ‘tea and chat’.
The catering team led by Di worked wonders – this was the first time the new kitchen had been used – the finishing touches only having been completed the day before! As usual an excellent lunch was enjoyed by all.
Grateful thanks are due, as ever, to the Meeting Point group and all the additional helpers.
