St. Nicolas Church, Bury Street, Millmead Wednesday 13th December at 2.00.p.m.
The two Guildford U3A choirs, together with the U3A Instrumental Ensemble and the U3A Belleplates Group are all combining to present a Christmas Carol Concert to raise funds for Challengers, the Guildford based Children’s Charity, whose Play Centre was gutted by a recent fire causing an estimated £600,000 of damage.
Under the direction of Conductors, John Varney and Wayne Richardson, the programme will include well known carols, Christmas choral music, readings and festive music at St. Nicolas Church, Bury Street, Millmead –by the Town bridge- for Wednesday 13th December at 2.00.p.m.
The programme includes new repertoire by John Rutter, Peter Cornelius and Mike Sammes, the Reigate born musician whose popular Singers held sway throughout the 1960s and 70s. The Instrumental Ensemble, conducted by Sheila Kuban, will play Rutter’s Christmas Lullaby whilst the Belleplates – with their handbell-like instruments – will play traditional Polish and Welsh carol tunes, directed by Shirley Aston.
The Challengers fire damaged Play Centre is currently being refurbished and is hoped to be available for use again by the February Half Term. Laura Sercombe, Challengers CEO said “ We are so happy and proud of the team for the progress that has been made so far. Our priority has been to ensure our play and pre-school services are back on their feet and we were so happy to welcome back the families who use our services on 24th September in our neighbouring building Urban Saints… We are so grateful to the U3A MusicMakers for supporting Challengers.”
Admission to the Carol Concert is free and will include a retiring collection in aid Challengers Charity Appeal, which has been promoted by the Surrey Advertiser.
